The ocean is full of secrets, but every now and then, it offers us a glimpse of something truly extraordinary. Last week, researchers off the coast of Tenerife had one of those moments when they spotted a rare abyssal humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii) near the surface a sight that might be the first of its kind ever recorded in broad daylight!
#1. A Deep-Sea Creature in the Sunlight?
Usually, these eerie-looking fish stay hidden in the pitch-black depths of 200 to 2,000 meters below the surface. Until now, most sightings were of dead specimens, larvae, or blurry images from deep-sea submersibles. But this time, underwater photographer David Jara Bogu captured the anglerfish as it drifted just two kilometers off Tenerife’s coast.
#2. Why Did It Come to the Surface?
Scientists are scratching their heads over why this deep-sea dweller made such an unexpected appearance. One theory is that changing ocean conditions—like the El Niño weather phenomenon—may have caused it to rise to shallower waters. El Niño reduces cold water upwelling, which might disrupt marine ecosystems and force creatures like the anglerfish to venture into unfamiliar territory.
#3. A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter
Marine biologist Laia Valor, who was part of the research team, described the surreal moment:
“We were heading back to port when I saw something dark in the water. It didn’t look like plastic or debris—it was something else. We spent hours observing it.”
Sadly, the anglerfish was in poor condition and only survived for a few hours before passing away. Researchers took it to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where experts will study it further to learn more about this elusive species.
#4. The Stuff of Nightmares… If You’re Tiny
Anglerfish might look terrifying, but they’re only dangerous if you’re a small fish. With their gaping jaws, sharp fangs, and signature bioluminescent lure dangling from their foreheads, they’re perfectly designed to ambush prey in the deep sea’s darkness. Their glowing lure attracts curious creatures—right into their toothy trap!
#5. Not the Only Rare Sighting
Just a few days earlier, another deep-sea marvel, the black seadevil anglerfish, was filmed swimming toward the surface near the Canary Islands. This species, usually found at depths of 650 to 6,500 feet, was caught on video by the same photographer, David Jara.
Seeing one anglerfish near the surface is rare, but two in such a short time? That’s almost unheard of!
#6. What Does This Mean for the Ocean?
Scientists are excited but also a little concerned. Deep-sea creatures don’t just show up near the surface for no reason. Are changing ocean conditions pushing them out of their comfort zones? Is there more going on beneath the waves than we realize?
One thing is certain: the ocean still holds countless mysteries, and with every strange sighting, we learn just a little bit more about the incredible world hidden beneath the surface.
