Did you know some deer have really unique features? One special kind is the albino deer, which is completely white with pink eyes, nose, and hooves because they lack pigmentation. Another kind is the piebald deer, which is more common and has cool spots or patches on its fur. Fun fact: about one in 1,000 deer are piebald, but only one in 30,000 are albino. That’s super rare!

In November 2020, Tracy Weese from Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, had an amazing stroke of luck. She spotted a rare albino whitetail deer buck strolling through her snowy backyard. Naturally, she grabbed her camera and snapped some pictures of this stunning creature. The photos quickly became a hit online.
Tracy confirmed the deer was definitely an albino, not a piebald. She explained that the brown patches on its head were from rubbing its head and antlers on trees as it shed its white velvet. Pretty fascinating, right?
There’s also a neat tidbit about the brown stain on the deer’s leg. It comes from the tarsal gland, which gets active during the rut, or mating season. This gland releases a scent that helps attract mates. White-tailed deer can get pretty big too, sometimes growing up to six or seven feet tall and weighing up to 300 pounds – about as heavy as an average person!

In Wisconsin, albino deer are protected by state law. Shooting white deer is a big no-no. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, hunters can’t shoot deer with all-white fur unless parts like the tarsal glands or head are colored differently. So, if you’re out hunting in Wisconsin, make sure to steer clear of those all-white deer to stay out of trouble.

While white-tailed deer usually live between 6 to 14 years, albino deer often have shorter lives. They tend to face several physical challenges and are more likely to die young or fall prey to predators. Sadly, most albino and piebald deer don’t make it to adulthood.
